Natural Ways to Keep Your Shower Clean

‘House pride’ is a real virtue to have as a homeowner, particularly when cleaning and tidying can be such a daunting task at even the best of times. It is no secret that many of us struggle to keep on top of essential ‘life admin’ involved in keeping a home, something borne out by the results of a recent survey.

The survey found that 28% of households in the UK clean their homes more than four times a week – a figure that falls below the international average. Amongst the various undignified tasks that get staved off, bathroom cleaning duties rank highly. This is particularly true when the harsh chemicals involved in keeping your bath or shower clean can make for an unpleasant afternoon. Are there more natural ways you can clean your shower for a fresher, more pleasant experience?

Wipe and Dry your Shower Daily

One of the best ways to keep your shower clean is to make a habit of wiping it dry on a daily basis. This may seem like an extreme measure, but it can be a serious help in preventing the build-up of soap scum and residue, on your shower screen as well as your surfaces and tiles.

A Stanley blade is your best friend in cases of soap scum build-up; it can be used to safely clean off build-up on your tiling and glass shower screens. Otherwise, a simple pass with an absorbent cloth after you shower will help to keep all surfaces clean and dry.

Upgrade your Shower Curtain

Plastic shower curtains are an inexpensive and convenient way to screen your shower bath, but they can also be an impediment to proper cleaning. Over time, shower curtains become a breeding ground for mould and mildew, which can be difficult to remove – and dangerous if left alone.

If you are still using a plastic shower curtain, you may want to consider upgrading to a glass shower enclosure. These are much easier to clean (as evidenced above) and can also make your bathroom look cleaner by virtue of their tidy design.

Create a Natural Shower Cleaning Solution

Another natural way to keep your shower clean is to create your own cleaning products, free of harmful or noxious chemicals. One of the simplest cleaning solutions you can make involves using just two household ingredients: bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar.

Mixing one part bicarbonate of soda with two parts white vinegar gives you an effervescent and effective cleaning solution, that lifts off stubborn stains with a little elbow grease – and without bleachy fumes.

Don’t Forget to Polish

Sometimes a bathroom doesn’t feel truly clean until it sparkles. Thankfully, getting that glossy sheen is a simple thing – again made possible with the simplest of solutions. Diluted white vinegar is the perfect glass cleaner, and also brings chrome fixtures up a treat.
